Enthusiastic cheers and hearty applause greeted the honorees of the 20th Annual Service Awards Ceremony on Thursday, June 8. The ceremony formally and publicly congratulates employees who have worked at BWH for multiples of five years, and honors their deep commitment to the hospital’s high standards of excellence in patient care, teaching and research. “What makes BWH a world class institution is the quality of the people who work here—people like you who make such valuablecontributions to the things we do here everyday,” said Matt Van Vranken, chief operating officer. “Without you, BWH would be just another hospital. But because of your commitment to what we do here, BWH is one of the nation’s and the world’s leading health care centers.” As the employees were congratulated by and received their gifts from various senior leaders of the hospital, vice-president of Human Resources and event master of ceremonies Cheryl Locke announced what news events had occurred the year that those employees started their BWH careers. As the event drew to a close, Mary Ellen Collins, RD—who received an award for 45 years of service, making her the most senior honoree—also received a standing ovation from the audience. In all, 959 employees were Service Awardees this year—351 for five years of service, 253 for 10 years, 124 for 15 years, 137 for 20 years, 68 for 25 years, 21 for 30 years, three for 35 years, and one each for 40 and 45 years of service. Combined, these employees represent a total of 11,405 years of service. Those employees who were unable to pick up their gifts at the ceremony may stop by the Volunteer Office, PBB-B, Room 306 (Exit 7 off the Nesson Pike), from Monday-Friday during regular business hours.
